Broken Garage Door Cable

Why Do Garage Door Cables Break?

Garage door lifting cables are critical components of the door’s lifting system. They work together with the torsion springs and cable drums to transfer the spring’s lifting force to the garage door.

The torsion spring stores a significant amount of energy, while the lifting cables transfer this force to the door so that it can be opened and closed smoothly and safely.

Like other moving components, garage door cables gradually wear through repeated use. Their service life can vary depending on the door, usage, installation and operating conditions, but many garage door wear-and-tear components can last around 10–15 years under normal conditions.

The problem is that a cable can look perfectly normal shortly before it fails. There may be little or no visible warning that it is approaching the end of its service life.

What Happens When a Garage Door Cable Breaks?

A broken cable is more than just a minor garage door problem.

If one side cable breaks or comes off the cable drum, the door can suddenly become unbalanced and uneven. One side may drop while the other remains supported, causing the door to twist and potentially come off its tracks.

This can result in:

  • The door becoming stuck
  • The door sitting unevenly or at an angle
  • One or more rollers coming out of the tracks
  • The lifting cable coming off the drum
  • Damage to the tracks or door panels
  • The door becoming off-track and unstable

Why Is a Broken Cable Dangerous?

A garage door is heavy and is normally supported by a combination of springs, cables, drums, rollers and tracks.

When one of the lifting cables fails, this balance can be lost.

If the cable fails while the door is open or partially open, the situation can become particularly dangerous. The door may become unstable and, in severe cases, could potentially fall from the tracks.

This creates a serious risk to people, vehicles and property underneath or near the door.

For this reason, a broken cable should never be treated as a simple “stuck door”.

What If You Didn’t Hear the Cable Break?

Unlike a broken torsion spring, which can sometimes produce a loud “bang”, a cable can fail without a noticeable sound.

You may simply discover one morning that:

  • The garage door is sitting crooked.
  • One side is higher than the other.
  • The door will not open properly.
  • The door has become stuck halfway.
  • A cable is visibly loose or hanging.
  • A cable has come off the drum.
  • Rollers have come out of the track.

If you notice any of these signs, stop operating the garage door immediately.

Do Not Operate a Garage Door with a Broken Cable

If you suspect that a garage door cable has broken, come off the drum or become loose:

Do not use the automatic opener.

Do not attempt to manually lift or close the door.

Operating the door with one cable missing can cause the door to twist further, pull rollers out of the tracks, damage the tracks or put additional stress on other components.

If the door is already open and appears unstable or off-track, stay clear of the area and contact Eden Garage Doors immediately.

How Long Do Garage Door Cables Last?

There is no fixed replacement date for every garage door cable. Service life depends on factors such as door weight, frequency of use, cable quality, installation and operating conditions.

However, if your garage door is 10–15 years old or more and still has its original cables, it is worth having the lifting system inspected, particularly if the cables show signs of wear, corrosion, fraying or deformation.

A cable that has reached the end of its service life can fail unexpectedly, so replacing significantly worn components before failure may help prevent a more serious garage door problem.
